An apostille marriage certificate is an Indian marriage certificate that carries the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) apostille, so that authorities in another Hague Convention country accept it as genuine without embassy legalisation. In India, the certificate is first verified by the state (in Delhi, by the SDM) and then apostilled by the MEA.
Couples usually discover this requirement late. The visa checklist arrives, a line says "apostilled marriage certificate", and the flight date is already fixed. This guide walks you through the whole apostille marriage certificate process the way we explain it to couples at our Malviya Nagar office: which certificate actually qualifies, who verifies it in your state, what the MEA does, how name differences cause trouble, and why Germany follows a different route.
Pro Attestation Services has been serving clients since 2015. We handle marriage certificates for spouses joining partners abroad, couples registering their Indian marriage in another country and families sorting out inheritance or insurance paperwork overseas.
Key Facts About Apostille Marriage Certificate
What Is an Apostille Marriage Certificate?
An apostille marriage certificate is a registered Indian marriage certificate that has been verified by the state government and then stamped with the MEA apostille. The apostille tells the foreign authority that the signature and seal on the certificate are genuine. It does not confirm the marriage itself or the facts written in the certificate.
That last point surprises many people. The apostille is a certificate about the document, not about your relationship. When an immigration officer in Italy or Canada sees the MEA apostille, they know an Indian authority checked that the registrar's signature is real. Whether your marriage meets their visa rules is still their decision.
Where the apostille sits on the certificate
The MEA apostille in India is a square, computer-generated sticker fixed on the back of the document. It carries a unique number. Anyone abroad can enter that number on the MEA website to confirm that the apostille was really issued. In our experience, foreign registry offices in Europe do check this number, so the original certificate with the original sticker is what you send.
Apostille versus attestation for a marriage certificate
Apostille and attestation are two different processes. The apostille is a single MEA step for countries that are members of the Hague Convention. Attestation is a longer chain of state verification, MEA attestation and embassy legalisation for countries outside the Convention. If your spouse visa is for Dubai, you need attestation. If it is for Rome, Toronto or Sydney, you need the apostille marriage certificate route described here.
Which Marriage Certificate Qualifies for an Apostille?
The certificate that qualifies is the one issued by a government marriage registrar. In India, that means a certificate issued under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, the Special Marriage Act 1954, the Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872 or a state's compulsory marriage registration law. A certificate from a temple, gurudwara, church or community body is not enough on its own.
The reason is simple. State verification officers verify the signature of a government officer. A priest, a wedding hall or a community association is not a government officer, so the state cannot vouch for that signature. In 2006, in Seema v. Ashwani Kumar, the Supreme Court directed that marriages be compulsorily registered, and most states now have a registration system. A registrar's certificate is the safest document to apostille.
Certificates that usually work
- Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 Certificate of marriage under the Special Marriage Act 1954 (common for inter-faith and court marriages) Marriage certificate issued under a state's compulsory registration law Christian marriage certificate registered under the Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872, where the registrar's copy is available
Certificates that usually need another step first
- A temple, gurudwara or Arya Samaj certificate: register the marriage with the local registrar and apostille the registrar's certificate instead A church-issued certificate that is not a registrar's copy: ask the church for the registered extract, or register the marriage A wedding invitation, photographs or an affidavit of marriage: these support a visa file but do not replace a marriage certificate A plain photocopy or a self-printed online record: the authority verifies originals or officially issued certified copies

Why Would You Need to Apostille Marriage Certificate Papers?
You need to apostille marriage certificate papers when a foreign government, court, registry or employer in a Hague Convention country asks for proof of your Indian marriage. The most common reasons are spouse and family visas, residence permits, registering the marriage abroad and changing a surname on foreign records.
Here are the situations we see most often:
- Spouse or partner visa. The spouse moving abroad shows the marriage certificate to prove the relationship. Some countries take a copy at the visa stage and ask for the apostilled original later.
- Residence permit after arrival. Many European immigration offices ask for an apostilled certificate, often with a translation, when the family applies for a residence card.
- Registering the marriage locally. Couples living in countries such as Italy, Spain or the Netherlands may need to record their Indian marriage with the local civil registry.
- Surname change on foreign documents. A wife who takes her husband's surname may need the apostilled certificate to update a foreign bank account, tax record or residence card.
- Children's paperwork. When a child is born abroad, the parents' marriage certificate is often requested for birth registration.
- Insurance, pension and inheritance. A surviving spouse claiming a pension or property abroad usually needs a recognised marriage certificate.
- Divorce or legal proceedings abroad. Foreign courts may ask for an apostilled certificate before they deal with an Indian marriage.
The receiving authority decides what it wants. Always read the exact wording of the checklist. "Apostilled", "legalised" and "certified copy" mean different things, and the difference decides your route.
How Do You Get an Apostille Marriage Certificate in India?
You get an apostille marriage certificate in three main stages: check and prepare the registrar's certificate, get it verified by your state's authorised department, and then submit it to the MEA for the apostille. An authorised collection agency handles the MEA submission. The apostille is then verified online and the original goes to the foreign authority.
Here is the full sequence we follow for a typical case:
- Check the certificate. Confirm it is a registrar's certificate, the names match both passports, the date and place of marriage are correct and the seal and signature are clear.
- Correct errors first. If anything is wrong, ask the registrar to correct it or reissue the certificate before any verification. A stamp placed on a wrong certificate cannot be moved to a corrected one.
- Notary, where needed. Some states or receiving countries want a notarised copy, or a notarised certificate before the state stage. We tell you if your case needs it.
- State verification. The certificate goes to the department that verifies personal documents in the state where it was issued. In Delhi, this is the SDM. In most states, it is the Home Department or the General Administration Department (GAD).
- MEA apostille. After state verification, the certificate goes to the MEA through an authorised outsourced agency. The MEA places the apostille sticker with its unique number.
- Online check. Verify the apostille number on the MEA website before the certificate leaves the country.
- Translation abroad, if asked. Some countries want a translation by a sworn or certified translator in their own language after the apostille.
Stage-by-stage view
Timelines are indicative. They depend on the state, holidays, the volume at each office and whether the certificate needs correction.

State Verification for a Marriage Certificate: How It Differs by State
State verification is the step where the state government confirms that the registrar who signed your marriage certificate is a genuine officer. The MEA will not apostille a marriage certificate without it. Personal documents such as marriage certificates go to the state Home Department, the GAD or the SDM, depending on the state.
This stage causes most of the delay and confusion, because each state organises it differently. The table below shows the general pattern. Offices, counters and procedures change, so we confirm the current process before we start your file.
Why the Delhi route is different
In Delhi, personal documents are verified by the SDM rather than a central Home Department counter. If your marriage was registered in South Delhi, for example, the verification normally goes through the matching SDM office. This is why we ask Delhi couples for the exact registrar office and address printed on the certificate.
Kerala certificates and Norka Roots
Kerala personal documents, including marriage certificates, receive Home Department attestation through Norka Roots. Many Kerala couples now live in other cities. They do not need to travel back. The certificate can be couriered for processing, and we coordinate the Kerala stage before sending it to the MEA.
What the state officer looks at
The officer compares the registrar's signature and seal with official records. Common reasons for return include a faded seal, an unsigned copy, a certificate printed from a portal without the expected verification code, or a certificate from a registrar the state cannot identify. Educational certificates do not go to the Home Department; only personal documents like marriage, birth and death certificates do.
The MEA Apostille for Marriage Certificate: What Happens at the Ministry
The MEA apostille for marriage certificate files is the final Indian step. After state verification, the Ministry of External Affairs checks the state officer's signature and places its apostille sticker on the back of the certificate. The sticker has a unique number that the foreign authority can verify online. No embassy step follows for Hague countries.
Since July 2012, the MEA has outsourced the collection of documents to authorised agencies, so you or your agent submit the certificate through one of these collection centres rather than at a ministry counter. The MEA also has Branch Secretariats in Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Guwahati. For most of our clients, the MEA stage is handled in New Delhi.
What the MEA does and does not check
The MEA verifies that the state verification is genuine. It does not re-examine your wedding, check your relationship or translate the certificate. A clean MEA apostille for marriage certificate holders simply proves that the Indian chain of signatures is authentic. Questions about your relationship, your visa eligibility or a translation belong to the foreign authority.
How to verify the apostille online
Once the certificate returns, look for the unique apostille number on the sticker. Enter it in the apostille verification section of the MEA website. The result should match the document type and your details. We check this for every file before we hand it back, and we recommend you check again yourself before you courier it abroad.
The MEA apostille for marriage certificate originals is one part of our personal document apostille service, which also covers birth certificates, affidavits and single status certificates for the same family.
How Long Does a Marriage Certificate Apostille Take?
A marriage certificate apostille usually takes a few working days at the MEA, plus the time for state verification, which varies from a few working days to a few weeks depending on the state. The whole apostille marriage certificate process is quickest when the certificate is a clean registrar's copy and no correction is needed. Timelines are indicative.
The biggest variables are outside anyone's control: the state's workload, public holidays, election periods and changes in office procedures. A Delhi certificate generally moves faster than a certificate that must travel to another state for verification. Courier time to and from your city also adds a few days.
In our experience, the most common reason for delay is not the government at all. It is a certificate that needs correction, a name spelt differently from the passport, or a portal printout that the state desk will not accept. Spending one day checking the certificate at the start can save weeks.
If you are working towards a visa appointment, tell us the date when you first contact us. We plan the file around it and tell you honestly if the date looks tight. You can also read our guide on apostille processing time for a wider view of each stage.
Which Countries Accept an Apostille Marriage Certificate from India?
An apostille marriage certificate from India is accepted in countries that are contracting parties to the Hague Apostille Convention and that have not objected to India's accession. As of the June 2026 HCCH update, the Convention has 130 contracting parties. Germany is the main exception, and non- member countries such as the UAE still need full attestation.
Recent members such as Bangladesh (30 March 2025), Algeria (9 July 2026) and Viet Nam (11 September 2026) are now inside the system too. If your destination joined recently, we check the HCCH status table before advising you, because new members sometimes take time to update their own office practice.

Why Germany Is the Exception for Indian Marriage Certificates
Germany objected to India's accession to the Apostille Convention in 2005 and has not withdrawn that objection. As a result, the Convention does not operate between India and Germany, and an MEA apostille on an Indian marriage certificate is not treated as valid authentication by German authorities. Couples going to Germany follow a separate process.
This matters a lot for Indian couples, because Germany is a popular destination for IT professionals, researchers and students, and their spouses often follow on family reunion visas. Getting the MEA apostille for a German file wastes time. German missions in India have their own document verification procedure for Indian civil status documents, and the requirements can change. We confirm the current German process with you before starting.
Other countries that objected at the same time behaved differently. Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Finland withdrew their objections in 2008-2009, so they now work with Indian apostilles. Portugal's objection came after the deadline and has no legal effect.
Spouse Visas in Hague Countries: Where the Apostille Fits
For spouse and family visas to Hague countries, the apostille marriage certificate is usually requested either with the visa application or at the residence permit stage after arrival. Each country, and sometimes each office, sets its own rule. Read the official checklist for your visa category, and keep the apostilled original safe even if only a copy is uploaded.
The examples below describe common patterns we see in client files. They are not legal advice and immigration rules change often, so always confirm the current checklist on the official government website of the destination country.
English-speaking countries
Applicants for partner or spouse visas to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand often upload a scanned copy of the marriage certificate during the online application. The apostille becomes important later, when the certificate is used for local registrations, a change of name, a court matter or a benefit claim. Many couples apostille the certificate before leaving India, because doing it from abroad is slower.
Continental Europe
In countries such as Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Poland, the apostilled certificate is frequently needed at the residence permit or civil registry stage, and it usually has to be translated into the local language. Some offices want the translation done by a sworn translator in that country. Ask whether the translator must also translate the apostille sticker itself.
Gulf members of the Convention
Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain are Hague members, so an apostille marriage certificate from India works for family visas there, subject to their local rules. Since November 2022, Indians generally do not need a police clearance certificate for Saudi visas, but the marriage certificate remains a core family document.
East Asia
Japan and South Korea are Convention members. Spouses joining partners there usually need the apostilled certificate plus a translation. Requirements differ between immigration offices and local ward or city offices, so we suggest checking with both.
Name Mismatch and Other Problems That Stop an Apostille
A name mismatch is the problem we see most often with marriage certificates. The certificate may show the wife's maiden name, while her passport shows her married surname, or a spelling may differ by one letter. The MEA will still apostille a genuine certificate, but the foreign authority may refuse it if the names do not clearly link to the passports.
The apostille does not fix errors. It only confirms the signature and seal. If your marriage certificate has a wrong spelling, a wrong date, missing parents' names or a wrong address, the foreign office will see that error with an official sticker on top of it.
Common name issues and practical fixes
- Maiden name on the certificate, married name on the passport. This is normal. Many authorities accept it with both passports. Some ask for a separate affidavit or a passport endorsement showing the spouse's name.
- Spelling difference. "Mohd." versus "Mohammed", or "Kaur" missing in one document. Ask the registrar to correct the certificate, or prepare a sworn affidavit that the names refer to the same person. An affidavit can be apostilled too.
- Initials versus full names. South Indian names are often written with initials in one document and in full in another. Explain this in a one-name affidavit if needed.
- Missing photographs. Some certificates carry the couple's photos. If the destination wants photos and yours has none, ask the receiving office whether supporting documents are enough.
- Old handwritten certificate. Older certificates may be hard to read or damaged. A fresh certified copy from the registrar is usually easier to verify.
Laminated or damaged certificates
Do not laminate a marriage certificate. The MEA sticker goes on the back of the document, and lamination makes that impossible. A torn, taped or laminated certificate is often refused at state verification. Request a fresh certified copy from the registrar instead.
What Documents Do You Need for a Marriage Certificate Apostille?
For a marriage certificate apostille, you normally need the original registrar's marriage certificate, a copy of both spouses' passports and an authorisation letter allowing an agent to submit the document. Some states or destination countries also want a notarised copy, an affidavit or witness details. Your exact list depends on the issuing state and the purpose.
Keep these ready before you contact any agency:
- Original marriage certificate issued by the registrar (or an officially certified copy) Clear copy of the husband's passport (first and last page) Clear copy of the wife's passport (first and last page) Authorisation letter signed by the applicant, if an agent will submit the document The destination country and purpose (spouse visa, residence permit, registration, name change) Any affidavit on name differences, if you have already made one The foreign authority's checklist, so we can read the exact wording
If you are outside India, a family member in India can hand over the documents, or you can courier them to our office. We also offer doorstep pickup in Delhi NCR and courier pickup across India.
Common Mistakes When You Apostille Marriage Certificate Documents
The most frequent mistakes are using a religious certificate instead of the registrar's certificate, applying for an apostille when the destination needs attestation, and leaving name errors uncorrected. Each one either stops the file or makes the apostilled certificate useless abroad. All of them can be avoided with a careful check at the start.
From the files that come to our desk, these are the mistakes we warn couples about most:
- Choosing the wrong route. Apostilling a certificate for the UAE or Qatar, or for Germany, where it will not be recognised.
- Submitting a temple or church certificate. These rarely pass state verification. Register the marriage first.
- Ignoring spelling differences. They are much easier to fix in India before the apostille than at a foreign counter.
- Laminating the certificate. This blocks the apostille sticker.
- Sending the only original abroad too early. Keep a certified copy, or apostille two originals if your plans involve more than one country.
- Leaving it until the last week. The state stage varies, and couriers between states add days.
- Using an unknown agent who promises a fixed date. No genuine agency can promise how fast a government office will work.
- Not checking the apostille online. Verify the unique number on the MEA website before the document leaves India.
What Does a Marriage Certificate Apostille Cost?
The cost of an apostille marriage certificate depends on the issuing state, whether a notary or affidavit is needed, the number of documents, courier distances and how urgently you need it. Government charges and service charges differ by document and state. Our team shares the exact total after discussing your certificate and destination with you.
We do not publish a single price, because a Delhi certificate going to the UK and a Kerala certificate going to Italy with an affidavit are very different jobs. When you contact us, we look at the certificate, confirm the route and tell you the full amount before any work begins. There are no hidden stage-by- stage additions once you have agreed.

Apostille Marriage Certificate Services for Couples Across India
An apostille marriage certificate lets your Indian marriage be recognised in Hague Convention countries without an embassy stamp. Whether your spouse is joining you in London, Toronto, Milan, Warsaw or Muscat, the foreign office needs to know that the certificate in front of it is genuine. The MEA apostille gives that assurance through a single sticker with a unique number that can be verified online. The Convention now has 130 contracting parties, so the same route serves most popular destinations for Indian families.
The process starts with the right certificate. Foreign authorities and Indian verification officers both prefer the registrar's marriage certificate issued under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act, the Indian Christian Marriage Act or a state registration law. Temple and community certificates support your story but rarely pass state verification. If you only have a religious certificate, register the marriage first and then begin the apostille.
Next comes state verification in the state that issued the certificate. In Delhi, the SDM verifies personal documents. Kerala certificates go to the Home Department through Norka Roots, and most other states use the Home Department or the General Administration Department. After that, the MEA apostille for marriage certificate files is completed through the authorised collection system, usually within a few working days. The state stage takes anywhere from a few working days to a few weeks. Timelines are indicative and depend on each office.
Two situations need special care. Germany objected to India's accession to the Apostille Convention, so a German family reunion file follows a different verification route. Non-Hague countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Malaysia need full attestation, not an apostille. Before we start, we confirm which route your destination needs, so you do not spend time and money on the wrong stamp.
Name differences are the other common trap. A maiden name on the certificate and a married name on the passport is usually fine, but a misspelt name can lead to refusal abroad. We read your certificate against both passports and suggest a correction or a sworn affidavit where needed. We also check the apostille number on the MEA website before your document leaves India.
Planning ahead saves the most time. If your spouse visa interview, residence permit appointment or registry date is already booked, share it with us on the first call. We work backwards from that date, tell you honestly whether it is realistic, and suggest apostilling a second certified copy if you expect to need the certificate in more than one place.
